Miriam Turley

Community Garden Support

Miriam Turley led the Growing Resilience project in her work with Social Farms & Gardens 2012 - 2024 practicing asset-based community development, specialising in networking between community growing groups and linking groups to policy and decision makers.

She led research and policy work on The Benchmark Standard for Community Gardens and Allotments co-produced with Council Officers from all 11 local Councils. She also led work on the Framework and Action Plan for Belfast City Council Climate Team to establish a Sustainable Food Partnership where she continues to play a pivotal role.

Both pieces of work demonstrate the benefits of genuine co-design and production. Miriam has built up expertise in Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, ensuring this is firmly embedded in our work in NI and UK wide. She sat on the SF&G EDI Policy Team. Miriam is part of a UK wide Networking Specialist Group.

She is in Year 3 BSc Hons in Community Development at Ulster University. Miriam has a BSc in Environmental Biology from Queen’s University Belfast. Miriam completed the Sustainable Land Use and Permaculture Design Certificate at Ragmans Lane Farm with Patrick Whitefield.

Conor O’Kane is a regenerative community horticulture and seed-saving specialist from Derry City with 30 years of experience in organic community horticulture and family farming. Conor is a qualified Permaculture trainer since 1997 and has experience in setting up and running numerous community gardens, housing and worker cooperatives in England, Northern Ireland and Donegal.

Conor is a personable communicator who has also produced a popular series of educational videos on regenerative gardening and seed saving – Lockdown Gardening. Conor has sat on the board of Community Gardens Ireland since 2019 and has extensive networks of community growers across Ireland. Conor is a coordinator of the Community Compost Network, along with Garden Organic and industry specialists.

From 2005 to 2010 he was the head gardener in the largest community horticulture project in West Donegal – Na Tithe Gloine in Gortahork, delivering training programmes, and running a 1 acre glasshouse and ½ acre of polytunnels. From 2016 to 2019 he was the horticultural consultant for the White Oaks Acorn Project, producing food for a 100-box CSA on 9 acres of Organic Certified land.

He delivers the Growing Challenges and Activities programme in Derry & Strabane with the flagship Acorn Farm Project. Since 2021 Conor coordinates the Seed It Union – a network of 21 Community Growing spaces across the north of the island of Ireland, saving seeds for each other with excess distributed to the wider community.

He is also on the co-ordinating group for the Crowd Breeding Network, part of the Gaia Seed Sovereignty Programme.

Mark Roberts

Mark Roberts, is the current Chair of Community Garden Support and the CEO of Liberty Consortium, based in Derry. In his day job he oversees Liberty’s number of projects within the Ballyarnett DEA in Derry. This includes the Playtrail Community Garden & Outdoor Play facility, the HUB Day Opportunities & BUD Club Youth Provision for adults with learning disabilities.

Marian Farrell

After living and working in Derry for 30 years, Marian is back in the place she grew up in County Down and is making more connections with people working for progressive change. Marian is a gardener, a walker, a reader of fiction and now in her dream job as a library assistant. Marian volunteers for several activist projects including Collaboration for Change.

Karin Eyben

Karin came to NI as a migrant more than 25 years ago to study at Magee. She hadn't planned to stay but events took over. Karin has moved between different sectors over the years from community relations to the women’s sector, to rural community development, integrated education, climate and environmental justice, and children’s rights. Karin is also a proud member of the Hare’s Corner Cooperative based in Garvagh.
